The Google Pixel 4, Apple iPhone 11 Pro, and the rise of Computational Photography | Upscaled


In just a few years, phone cameras have gone from "just alright" to being capable of taking some truly impressive pictures. The most impressive part is that they've done so while the hardware of smartphone cameras has barely changed. Sure, sensors and lenses have improved a little, but the software is what is really behind these high-quality phone cameras. So-called computational photography uses algorithms and machine learning to combine and stack pictures to produce a result beyond what the phone would normally be capable of, and the new iPhone 11 Pro and Pixel 4 are leading the way.
