The Origin of the Robot

Robots taking over jobs is the topic of this episode of The AI Minute. For more on Artificial Intelligence: https://voicesinai.com https://gigaom.com https://byronreese.com https://amzn.to/2vgENbn... Transcript: The earliest robots we know of in stories were mechanical creatures animated by magic, but by the time Frankenstein was published, science had mostly replaced the magic. By the time of the twentieth century rolled around, robots were completely creations of science. The word robot was coined in 1920 in a Czech play and is derived from a Slavic word for slavery. The robots in that play were manufactured using bio-mechanics, and they were designed to do whatever drudgery humans didn’t want to do. A human character in the play predicts something that sounds very much like the techno optimists of today say: “In ten years Rossum's Universal Robots will produce so much corn, so much cloth, so much everything, that it will be practically without price. There will be no poverty. All work will be done by living machines. Everybody will be free from worry and liberated from the degradation of labor. Everybody will live only to perfect himself.” The robots souls were not crushed by this work because they were made without souls, or feelings, or passions of any kind. Eventually the humans stopped doing any work and let the robots do everything until the robots finally decided to take over and kill all the humans. So let’s hope this isn’t a case where life imitates art. http://bit.ly/2YMRS8H gigaom May 23, 2019 at 03:48PM

Banksy Crashes Venice Biennale With an Installation That Criticizes The City's Cruise Ship Problem

A new video appeared on Banksy's Instagram account showing the famous street artist (or perhaps someone from his team) setting up an unlicensed stall in Venice. The installation is interpreted as a critique of the giant cruise ships that are allowed to sail the Venetian lagoon and it seems to have resonated with locals. The artist accompanied his post with the caption: "Setting out my stall at the Venice Biennale. Despite being the largest and most prestigious art event in the world, for some reason I’ve never been invited." ► Subscribe for more tech & culture videos: http://on.mash.to/subscribe ◄ MORE FROM MASHABLE ‌• Video - https://youtu.be/6ElleCub6uM ‌• Video - https://youtu.be/jAu1ZsTCA64 ‌• Video - https://youtu.be/W8T6fYt9-tA  Subscribe to Mashable: http://on.mash.to/subscribe  Best of playlist: https://on.mash.to/BestOf  MASHABLE ACROSS THE WEB  Mashable.com: http://on.mash.to/1hCcRpl  Facebook: http://bit.ly/2T5bgLp Twitter: http://bit.ly/2Cx8gSN Instagram: http://bit.ly/2Tctzi3 Mashable is for superfans. You Can Control This Robot by Flexing Your Muscles

In a new paper published today, MIT CSAIL researchers Joseph DelPreto and Daniela Rus used electromyography sensors to make communication between a robot and a human a lot more intuitive without the need for verbal cues. Their system, dubbed RoboRaise, is able to mirror the user's movements by detecting and interpreting the person's biceps and triceps activity. Their research shows that we are a step closer to seamless human-robot interactions. DelPreto and Rus hope that this system will be particularly useful in manufacturing and construction scenarios. ► Subscribe for more tech & culture videos: http://on.mash.to/subscribe ◄ MORE FROM MASHABLE ‌• Video - https://youtu.be/6ElleCub6uM ‌• Video - https://youtu.be/jAu1ZsTCA64 ‌• Video - https://youtu.be/W8T6fYt9-tA  Subscribe to Mashable: http://on.mash.to/subscribe  Best of playlist: https://on.mash.to/BestOf  MASHABLE ACROSS THE WEB  Mashable.com: http://on.mash.to/1hCcRpl  Facebook: http://bit.ly/2T5bgLp Twitter: http://bit.ly/2Cx8gSN Instagram: http://bit.ly/2Tctzi3 Mashable is for superfans.
