The world's most controversial telescope


The Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) promises to capture images 12 times sharper than those of the Hubble Space Telescope, but this billion-dollar international observatory has one major problem. The TMT's chosen location is atop Mauna Kea, which is the most sacred peak in the Hawaiian islands. For months, Native Hawaiians have physically blocked construction of the telescope.
